President Trump said on Sunday that the US reached a trade agreement with its largest trading partner, making it what the WSJ calls his biggest deal so far as he attempts to reshape the global trading system through higher tariffs for the nation’s trading partners. This latest deal, and a feather in the White House’s cap, imposes a 15% baseline tariff on most goods from the EU, and includes EU agreement to buy $750B of US energy products, while additionally investing $600B in the US. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen went on record to say that the deal “creates certainty in uncertain times.”

Mexico is the largest single-country US trading partner, but the EU, as a 27-nation bloc, is larger, and its policy is handled centrally. In 2024, the US imported approximately $600B in goods from the EU while exporting only about $370B.
